Mankato Launches Urgent Holiday Fire Safety Campaign Today
UPDATE: The City of Mankato has just launched its urgent holiday fire safety campaign, “Keep the Wreath Bright, Prevent a Red Light,” aiming to prevent festive tragedies. Running from November 27 through January 1, this initiative emphasizes the importance of fire safety during the holiday season.
Located at 710 S. Front St., the Mankato Department of Public Safety has unveiled a visually striking wreath that will track preventable fires and fire-related injuries throughout the season. The goal is to keep the wreath unadorned by red and blue bulbs—symbols of preventable fires and injuries—by encouraging community vigilance and adherence to safety protocols.
As the holiday festivities begin, Mankato officials stress that fire safety is a top priority. Residents are reminded to remain cautious while cooking and to maintain a safe distance around stoves. The use of battery-operated candles is highly encouraged to reduce fire risks, along with daily maintenance checks on holiday lights and Christmas trees.
Authorities emphasize that each colored bulb on the wreath serves as a stark reminder of community responsibility. A clear bulb represents safety; however, a red bulb is added when a preventable fire occurs, and a blue bulb indicates a preventable fire-related injury. The community is urged to keep the wreath bright and free of these colored bulbs, reinforcing a collective commitment to safety.
Residents can find detailed fire prevention tips through the city’s social media channels, designed to educate and engage the public in ensuring a safe holiday season. The initiative aims to spark discussion around fire safety while fostering a sense of community responsibility.
As part of this proactive approach, residents are also encouraged to install and regularly check smoke alarms. The Mankato Department of Public Safety is calling on everyone to take simple, actionable steps to contribute to a safer environment.
Why It Matters NOW: With the holiday season upon us, the risk of fire-related incidents increases significantly. Mankato’s campaign serves as a critical reminder that safety measures can save lives and properties during a time typically filled with joy and celebration.
Community members are urged to stay informed and participate actively in this campaign. The success of “Keep the Wreath Bright, Prevent a Red Light” is visually measurable by the wreath’s brightness or the somber glow of its colored bulbs. Join Mankato in making this holiday season safe for everyone—spread the word and share the message of fire safety today!
