URGENT UPDATE: Massachusetts residents are bracing for a cold and blustery Friday, with forecasters warning of a potential risk for freezing rain this weekend. The National Weather Service reports that temperatures will struggle to reach the mid-40s, particularly in the Berkshires and northern Central Massachusetts, where highs may barely touch 40 degrees.

Wind gusts will exacerbate the chill, making it feel significantly colder throughout the day. In Boston, expect increasing cloud cover with a high of 46 degrees and a low of 29 degrees. Meanwhile, Hyannis will see a high of 45 and a low of 31. In Pittsfield, a slight chance of rain and snow showers may occur in the afternoon, as temperatures barely reach 40 with a low of 22.

Springfield will enjoy mostly sunny skies, hitting a high of 46 and a low of 25, while Worcester will also remain sunny, reaching 43 during the day before dropping to 26 at night. However, late-night temperatures could plummet into the low and mid-20s across much of the state, with coastal regions expected to stay slightly warmer.

As Saturday dawns, sunshine will prevail initially, but clouds are anticipated to roll in during the afternoon. Critical weather developments are expected to unfold as precipitation is projected to begin Saturday night, spreading eastward. Those in higher terrains should prepare for a risk of freezing rain as the storm approaches, though conditions are not expected to become icy as temperatures rise overnight.

Rainfall will taper off by Sunday morning as the cold front exits the state. While temperatures might initially soar into the 50s, they are forecasted to plunge into the 30s by afternoon, with wind gusts potentially reaching up to 40 mph by late morning.

This developing weather scenario poses risks for travel and outdoor activities, urging residents to stay informed and prepare for changing conditions. Further updates will follow as the situation evolves.
