Mayor Lurie Appoints Alan Wong as New District 4 Supervisor
UPDATE: Mayor Daniel Lurie has just announced the appointment of Alan Wong as the new Supervisor for District 4, following a highly publicized setback with his previous selection. This urgent decision comes just days after Lurie’s former appointee, Beya Alcaraz, resigned amid allegations of mismanagement and potential legal violations.
Wong, a seasoned political veteran and lifelong resident of the Sunset District, is set to be sworn in on Monday, just in time for a critical Board of Supervisors vote on Tuesday concerning Lurie’s controversial zoning plan aimed at increasing housing densities. This plan is essential for meeting state housing requirements in northern and western neighborhoods, making Wong’s timely appointment crucial for the community.
In a statement, Mayor Lurie emphasized the necessity of having a Supervisor who is deeply connected to the district: “From the very beginning, I’ve been clear about the kind of Supervisor District 4 needs: someone who lives and breathes the district.” Lurie assured residents that Wong would be a strong advocate for their needs.
Alan Wong, who has extensive experience in local policy, holds positions as the policy director at the Children’s Council of San Francisco and an elected trustee at City College. He expressed his commitment to restoring trust in local government, stating, “I believe the Sunset, and San Francisco, can thrive again. But we need leadership that restores trust in city government.”
Wong, 38, has an impressive resume, including service as a first lieutenant in the Army National Guard and a history of community organizing. His roles have included legislative aide to former Supervisor Gordon Mar and senior legislative aide in San Mateo County. His deep roots in the community and policy expertise position him as a viable candidate for the upcoming June election to fill the remainder of the term and the November 2026 elections for a full four-year term.
The Mayor’s announcement follows a rigorous vetting process, which included public scrutiny of potential candidates. Wong’s name emerged as the top choice amid concerns over the qualifications of other candidates, ensuring that he was selected for his capabilities and connection to the community.
Community leaders have praised Wong’s selection. Frank Noto, co-founder of Stop Crime SF, stated, “No one is more qualified than Alan. He has the requisite policy, political, and community experience to serve as an exemplary member of the Board.”
Wong’s immediate focus will be on addressing pressing issues in District 4, including public safety, housing opportunities, and ensuring residents can access vital services. As he prepares for his new role, the community is eager to see how his leadership will impact the future of the Sunset District.
This announcement marks a significant turn in local politics as residents look forward to Wong’s leadership. With the vote on the housing plan looming, all eyes will be on the newly appointed Supervisor as he steps into this pivotal role.
