UPDATE: The Minnesota Gophers women’s basketball team suffered a narrow 63-57 defeat against the Kansas Jayhawks in a tense road matchup on Wednesday night. This marks the Gophers’ first loss of the season, dropping their record to 4-1.

After a sluggish start, where Minnesota shot just 17.6% from the field in the first quarter, the team showed resilience. They managed to recover and even took a brief lead in the second quarter, outscoring Kansas 19-11 to lead 25-23 at halftime.

Despite the comeback, the Gophers struggled to maintain momentum in the second half. Kansas regained control, leading for most of the period. Minnesota fought back to tie the game at 49-all but could not secure the win, closing the gap to 59-57 with just 36 seconds remaining. Ultimately, the Jayhawks secured victory with free throws, as the Gophers finished the game shooting 34.4% overall and 21.7% from three-point range.

Tori McKinney led Minnesota with 14 points, supported by Mara Braun with 13 points and Grace Grocholski contributing 12 points. The loss underscores the challenges of early-season road games and highlights the Gophers’ need to sharpen their shooting.

Looking ahead, the Gophers are set to participate in the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship tournament in Nassau, Bahamas. Their next game is scheduled for 3 p.m. on November 20, 2023, against South Florida, followed by a match against either Harvard or Alabama on Wednesday.

Fans and analysts will be closely watching how the Gophers rebound from this setback as they head into the Bahamas. Stay tuned for further updates on their performance and strategies in the upcoming tournament.
