New Oklahoma Law Bans Approaching Police Within 25 Feet
UPDATE: Starting today, a new law in Oklahoma officially prohibits individuals from coming within 25 feet of law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and emergency medical responders if they have been warned not to do so. This urgent legislation aims to protect first responders while they perform their duties.
Officials from the Major County Sheriff’s Office announced the law as part of a broader initiative to curb interference with first responders. Under this law, anyone who knowingly approaches a first responder with the intent to interfere, threaten, or harass can face serious consequences.
The law, which took effect on November 1, 2023, defines “first responders” to include peace officers, correctional officers, probation and parole officers, and emergency medical technicians. The statute explicitly states that it is illegal to approach these individuals after receiving a verbal warning.
Those who violate this law could be charged with a misdemeanor, facing penalties that include up to one year in county jail or a fine of $1,000, or both.
This legislative action stems from increasing concerns over the safety of first responders in Oklahoma, as interference during emergency situations can jeopardize public safety. The Major County Sheriff’s Office emphasized that this rule is crucial for ensuring that emergency personnel can carry out their responsibilities without distraction or danger.
Additionally, it’s important to note that firefighters are already protected under existing laws, which categorize interference with their duties as a felony.
As this law takes effect, citizens are urged to respect the boundaries established for law enforcement and first responders. The Major County Sheriff’s Office is committed to enforcing this new regulation and ensuring the safety of all individuals involved in emergency responses.
