NYU Student Assault: Suspect Arrested After Shocking Attack
UPDATE: A suspect has been arrested in a shocking attack on a New York University student, raising serious safety concerns across campus. James Rizzo, 45, was apprehended on Tuesday after a disturbing video captured him assaulting a 20-year-old woman on her way to class in Greenwich Village, Manhattan.
The incident unfolded on Monday morning in front of 735 Broadway. Police reports indicate that Rizzo approached the victim from behind, pulling her hair and striking her head and buttocks, ultimately knocking her to the ground. Bystanders were horrified as they witnessed the attack, prompting a group of women to rush to her aid and call 911.
“This was scary and very disturbing,” said Ashlyn Prieto, an NYU graduate student. “It’s definitely something to be more on the lookout for, especially on my commute.”
Rizzo, who has an extensive criminal history including 16 prior arrests and a conviction for persistent sexual abuse, was released from prison just last month. His criminal record includes a 1997 murder charge and multiple incidents of groping women, with one documented case involving a 33-year-old woman in Greenwich Village.
The NYPD connected the dots that led to Rizzo’s arrest while responding to a report of a man sleeping in a building. Authorities confirmed he has been charged with persistent sexual abuse, forcible touching, and assault.
As the investigation unfolds, police are looking into whether Rizzo is linked to additional attacks on female students at NYU. “We take this incident very seriously,” said NYU spokesperson John Beckman. “The University is pleased that a suspect has been apprehended, and we continue to offer support to the victim.”
Student reactions reflect a growing unease on campus. NYU freshman Rachel Rosenberg expressed heightened concerns for safety, stating, “Seeing something like this happen definitely brings it to my concern more.”
The NYPD urges anyone with additional information related to this incident or other assaults to come forward. This developing story continues to resonate with the NYU community, highlighting the urgent need for vigilance and safety on campus.
Stay tuned for further updates as authorities work to ensure the safety of all students.
