Oak Fire Arsonist Edward Wackerman Released with Ankle Monitor
UPDATE: The accused Oak Fire arsonist, 73-year-old Edward Wackerman, has been released from jail with an electronic ankle monitor as of Monday night, officials confirm. The Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office announced this urgent development following a court order, raising significant concerns among local residents.
Wackerman was arrested on June 16, 2023, for allegedly igniting the Oak Fire, a catastrophic event that struck Mariposa County on July 22, 2022, resulting in the destruction of 127 homes. This incident is regarded as the most devastating fire in the county’s history, with long-lasting impacts on the community.
During a recent court hearing, Sheriff Jeremy Briese stated that representatives from both the California Department of Justice and Wackerman’s defense agreed on his release conditions. The sheriff expressed his commitment to monitoring Wackerman closely, stating,
“The sheriff’s office will do everything we can to be of assistance. We hope things like this can be reversed.”
The community’s anxiety is palpable as Wackerman awaits his next court appearance scheduled for January 2026. Sheriff Briese reassured residents that the sheriff’s office is taking measures to ensure effective monitoring, stating,
“I don’t know if that’s in the legislature or the assembly or case law or what we gotta do, but it’s not right.”
Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant as they navigate this developing situation. The implications of Wackerman’s release are profound, particularly for those affected by the Oak Fire, as the community grapples with the aftermath and seeks justice.
As more details emerge, residents are advised to stay informed and connected with local authorities. This situation remains fluid, and updates will follow as they become available.
