Ogdensburg Airport Unveils $25M Renovation to Attract Travelers
UPDATE: The newly remodeled Ogdensburg International Airport officially opened today, marking a significant leap forward in efforts to attract Canadian travelers back to the region. The $25 million renovation aims to enhance the travel experience, providing a modern gateway for visitors from Canada and beyond—just in time for the busy travel season.
Officials from New York state and local leaders gathered to celebrate the completion of extensive upgrades, which include a state-of-the-art ticketing counter, security enhancements, and a welcoming community space. Airport Manager Charlie Garrelts emphasized the transformative nature of the renovations, stating, “It’s everything from check-in, all the way to getting on the plane.”
The project received substantial backing, with $18 million funded by New York state as part of the $230 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. This initiative aims to showcase the potential of rural airports, positioning them as vital contributors to local economies. “The goal was to try to bring attention, to invest in these communities so that they’re, you know, when people are flying in, it’s a great experience,” said Janet Ho, Assistant Commissioner of Finance & Integrated Modal Services.
With the airport located near the northern border, officials see a great opportunity to rekindle ties with Canadian travelers. Garrelts noted, “Canadians are always our partners and our friends. Getting them in here, using our facility, and spending local dollars in the U.S. is a great benefit for this community.”
Despite these improvements, airport officials report a decline in flight bookings from Canada this year, which has impacted revenue. The new renovations are intended to reverse this trend, providing a more inviting atmosphere for travelers.
Currently, Breeze Airways offers flights from Ogdensburg to Washington, D.C., and Raleigh-Durham, NC. Additionally, starting in February 2024, the airline will introduce seasonal flights to Orlando, coinciding with spring break, further catering to family travelers.
Executive Director of the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority, Steve Lawrence, expressed gratitude for Canadian visitors, stating, “We really appreciate Canadians and we appreciate their business.” He emphasized the airport’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience, hoping that the upgraded facilities will encourage more Canadians to cross the border.
As Ogdensburg International Airport positions itself as a key player in regional tourism, the community watches closely for the impact of these renovations. Travelers and stakeholders alike are eager to see if this investment will rekindle interest and boost local economies by welcoming back Canadian visitors.
Stay tuned for further updates as the airport embarks on this new chapter in its journey to attract travelers and enhance the regional economy.
