Orono High School Hall of Fame Induction Set for Saturday
UPDATE: The Orono High School Athletic Hall of Fame is set to welcome five new members this Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 3:30 PM during an induction ceremony at the high school. This event will take place between home basketball games featuring the girls’ and boys’ Red Riot teams, making it a fitting tribute to the two former basketball coaches being honored.
Among the inductees are legendary coaches Bob Cimbollek and John Giffin, who have left an indelible mark on Orono athletics. Cimbollek, who coached from 1963 to 1969, achieved an impressive record of 106-32, leading the boys’ basketball team to two state championships in 1967 and 1969. He later earned five state championships at other schools, showcasing his exceptional coaching talent.
Giffin succeeded Cimbollek as the boys’ basketball coach, amassing 136 wins during his nine seasons. His crowning achievement came in 1973 with a perfect 22-0 season and a state championship. Giffin has been recognized as the statewide coach of the year twice, reflecting his outstanding contributions to the sport.
Joining them is Jeff Mateja, a standout athlete from the class of 1997, who excelled in soccer and track. Mateja captained all three teams and set multiple school records in hurdling events, earning individual state titles and contributing to team victories at various championship levels. He furthered his athletic career by running track at Bentley University.
Recognizing community contributions, Diann and Billy Libby will be inducted in the “special contributor” category. The Libbys have dedicated years to supporting Orono athletics through various volunteer roles. Diann’s extensive involvement includes coaching middle school track, managing concessions for the booster club, and officiating track-and-field events. Billy served as the football announcer for nearly 20 years, becoming a beloved voice in Orono sports.
This induction ceremony is not just about honoring past achievements; it represents a celebration of community spirit and the dedication of individuals who have shaped Orono athletics. With the event coinciding with home games, attendees can expect a lively atmosphere filled with school pride.
As the induction date approaches, excitement grows among students, alumni, and community members. This is a momentous occasion for Orono High School, and it’s one fans won’t want to miss. Stay tuned for more coverage following the ceremony!
