Record 1,500 Turkeys Distributed in Paterson Amid SNAP Cuts
UPDATE: Paterson, New Jersey, witnessed an unprecedented turnout for its annual turkey giveaway, distributing 1,500 free turkeys and chickens just ahead of Thanksgiving. This urgent event, spurred by recent SNAP benefit cuts during the ongoing government shutdown, highlights the increasing struggles families face to afford basic groceries.
Long lines wrapped around Paterson City Hall as families eagerly awaited their turn to receive a holiday meal. “It’s been a little bit tough because I am a single mom and I’m not from here. This is great,” said Erly Vivas, expressing her gratitude for the support. Meanwhile, Brenda Weaver, a grandmother, emphasized the impact of rising food prices, stating, “How are we supposed to feed kids if the prices keep going up and we’re not getting more money?”
The USDA has reported that the price of beef and veal is projected to rise by 11.6% over the coming months, with pork and poultry prices also experiencing increases of 1.4% and 1.9%, respectively. This inflation crisis is leaving many families in dire need as they approach the holiday season.
Local business owner Gjebar Beqiri, who sponsored the turkey giveaway, commented on the importance of community support during tough times. “I think this time of year around the holidays we need to show more giving and more love,” he stated, acknowledging the shared struggles within the city.
Paterson’s mayor, Andre Sayegh, noted the stark increase in demand this year, with three times as many people attending compared to previous giveaways. “As you can see, there is a tremendous need,” he said. “This is just a sign of the times. We have a cost crisis and an issue of affordability.”
The government shutdown has compounded the issues faced by low-income families, making the distribution of these turkeys critical. The event not only provided food but also fostered a sense of community and hope among residents.
As holiday preparations continue, residents of Paterson are reminded of the ongoing challenges they face, underscoring the importance of initiatives like this turkey giveaway. The need for support remains urgent, as families grapple with the realities of rising prices and reduced benefits.
