UPDATE: Famed skateboarder Terry Kennedy is set to be released from prison on December 31, 2025, just in time for New Year’s Eve. The Illinois Department of Corrections confirmed this breaking news, revealing that Kennedy, aged 40, received sentence credit that accelerated his release date.

Kennedy’s release comes after serving time for his involvement in the death of fellow skater Josiah Kassahun, who tragically passed away following an altercation in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, on July 27, 2021. This incident, which occurred outside the Comfort Suites Motel, resulted in Kennedy being charged with first-degree murder. However, he was acquitted of that charge in 2022, ultimately convicted on two counts of aggravated battery, leading to a two five-year sentence to be served consecutively at 50 percent.

Kennedy will be under supervised release until June 30, 2026, at which point he will be fully discharged. This news has sparked conversations among fans and fellow skateboarders, many of whom are eager to see how Kennedy reintegrates into the skateboarding community.

The emotional impact of Kennedy’s case has been profound, especially given the tragic loss of Kassahun, only 23 years old at the time of his death. Prosecutors stated that during the incident, Kassahun attempted to calm Kennedy down when he suddenly became aggressive, resulting in a fatal confrontation.

Kennedy, a known figure in the skateboarding world and a competitor in notable events like the X Games and Maloof Money Cup, has made appearances in various TV shows and skateboarding video games, making him a recognizable name.

As the countdown to his release begins, skateboarding enthusiasts are watching closely, with many sharing their thoughts on social media. Kennedy’s release is generating significant buzz, as fans anticipate his next steps upon returning to freedom.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as Kennedy prepares to walk free in just 29 days.
