URGENT UPDATE: Heavy snow continues to blanket the Chicago area this morning, creating hazardous driving conditions across the region. The National Weather Service has issued multiple alerts as snowfall began between 9 p.m. Saturday and midnight, with forecasts predicting accumulation of 2 to 3 inches across most areas, and isolated totals of up to 4 inches just north of Interstate 80.

According to ABC7 Chicago AccuWeather Meteorologist Jaisol Martinez, the snow is expected to taper off from west to east between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Sunday. By 5 a.m., areas south of I-80 were primarily experiencing lingering flurries from the overnight system. As temperatures drop throughout the day, additional snow is anticipated, particularly from lake-effect snow this evening.

The Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications is advising drivers to exercise caution due to slick, snow-covered roads. In response to the winter weather, the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation announced that the city will activate a Phase II snow program overnight, deploying over 220 salt spreaders to treat the roads. Crews will focus on arterial streets, bridges, and overpasses to ensure safe passage for emergency vehicles and public transportation.

Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay updated on road conditions and to take necessary precautions when traveling. The forecast indicates more snow later this week, with temperatures expected to plunge significantly on Saturday.
