Sterling Heights Launches Urgent Food Drive Amid SNAP Cuts
UPDATE: Sterling Heights kicks off its 47th Annual Ken Stempowski Memorial Food Drive as urgent needs rise due to the federal shutdown and SNAP cuts. Residents and businesses are rallying together to combat food insecurity in the community with this vital initiative.
The food drive, spearheaded by the Department of Public Works, has taken on heightened importance as families face financial strains. “Ken’s legacy reminds us that one person’s compassion can create lasting change,” stated DPW Director Mike Moore. The drive, named after a dedicated city employee, aims to continue his mission of neighborly support during these challenging times.
This year, the food drive has expanded its reach by partnering with the Chaldean Community Foundation, aiming to enhance its impact on those affected by the current economic hardships. Mayor Michael C. Taylor emphasized the importance of this collaboration, asserting that it is essential for reaching all residents in need.
Donation bins are now located throughout Sterling Heights, including at City Hall, the Community Center, and the Sterling Heights Public Library. Residents can drop off nonperishable food items until December 17th. Additionally, contributions will be accepted during the upcoming Sterling Christmas event in early December, marking an opportunity for community engagement.
Monetary donations are also encouraged, with all proceeds directed to the Community Food Bank of Macomb County. This organization supports local food pantries and meal services, directly responding to the escalating needs of residents.
As the food drive progresses, officials are urging community members to participate and contribute to this essential cause. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, as many families struggle to put food on the table during the ongoing federal challenges.
With the partnership and collective efforts, the city hopes to not only meet immediate needs but also foster a spirit of unity and support among its residents. Every donation matters, and the community is encouraged to show its strength and compassion during this critical time.
Stay tuned for updates on the food drive’s progress and more ways to get involved as Sterling Heights continues to stand together in solidarity.
