Trump and Bannon Float Unconstitutional Third Term, Analysts Say
UPDATE: President Donald Trump and former adviser Steve Bannon are creating a major stir by discussing the possibility of a third term, drawing sharp criticism and concern from political analysts. In a revealing segment on Morning Joe this morning, journalist Jonathan Karl highlighted that their antics serve as “trolling,” specifically targeting one prominent Republican figure.
Karl, who is an ABC News correspondent and author of Retribution: Donald Trump and the Campaign That Changed America, stated that Trump’s continued references to Trump 2028 and the accompanying merchandise are strategic moves to unsettle his critics and potential rivals, particularly JD Vance. “Bannon is not a big JD Vance fan at all,” Karl noted, indicating that the rhetoric may undermine Vance’s aspirations within the GOP.
The 79-year-old Trump is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term. However, both he and Bannon have hinted at the idea of Trump remaining active in politics into his 80s, thereby complicating the Republican landscape for candidates like Vance who aim to position themselves as the next MAGA leader.
“At what point does he actually make it clear, ‘No, I’m not running, and it’s one of these guys?’” Karl questioned. He referenced the political dynamics of a lame-duck presidency, recalling how attention can quickly shift away from an incumbent when they signal their exit. “Nobody pays any attention,” he added, emphasizing the urgency for Trump to clarify his intentions.
As tensions rise within the Republican Party, all eyes are on Trump’s next moves. The implications of his comments could significantly impact the 2024 election landscape, with potential candidates waiting for a clear signal from the former president. Will Trump step back and allow others to rise, or will he continue to dominate the conversation?
This situation is developing rapidly, and political analysts are closely monitoring the outcomes. Stay tuned for updates on this unfolding story that could reshape the future of the Republican Party and the upcoming election cycle.
