UDOT Completes US-191 Realignment, Boosting Safety Near Vernal

UPDATE: The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has just completed a major safety upgrade on US-191 north of Vernal, significantly improving travel conditions for drivers heading to Flaming Gorge. The newly finished US-191 Realignment Project replaces a treacherous 2.6-mile stretch of road with safer, straighter alignments.
This crucial development, announced today, was made possible through an innovative public-private partnership with Simplot Phosphates, saving taxpayers approximately $40 million. UDOT officials confirm the new alignment includes features designed to enhance safety, such as a northbound climbing lane for heavy vehicles, a southbound passing lane, and a new runaway truck ramp.
According to Rob Clayton, region 3 director for UDOT, the previous switchbacks posed serious safety risks. “I think everybody is familiar with this section of the roadway and the switchbacks that used to exist here,” Clayton stated. “The new alignment is just going to be a much better situation for everybody that uses this road.”
As part of the project, standard-width shoulders were added to improve recovery zones, providing more space for drivers who veer off the roadway to regain control. The swift completion of this project not only enhances safety but also promotes smoother traffic flow for the many tourists and truckers who frequent the area.
Senator Ron Winterton (R-Roosevelt) praised the partnership, calling it a “win-win solution for everyone involved.” He emphasized the importance of these improvements, stating, “The traveling public will really like that. We have a lot of out-of-state travelers, truckers, and tourists that come down and get themselves in trouble. The mountain is steep; it has to be respected.”
Clayton noted that without Simplot’s involvement and federal funding, these upgrades might not have occurred for another 50 years. The project exemplifies how collaboration between public and private sectors can lead to timely, cost-effective improvements that benefit the community.
Drivers can now expect a safer journey along US-191, which has long been notorious for its hazardous conditions. The realignment project is a significant step forward in ensuring the safety of all road users.
For those traveling to Flaming Gorge or utilizing this corridor, the enhancements are a welcome change that promises to reduce accidents and improve overall travel experiences.
Stay tuned for further updates on this and other vital infrastructure projects across Utah.
