BREAKING: A new case of HIV has been confirmed in Penobscot County, bringing the total number of cases in the ongoing outbreak to 31, according to the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This alarming development raises urgent concerns about public health as officials warn that the true number of infections may be significantly higher.

The outbreak, which began in October 2023, predominantly affects individuals who have reported injecting drugs or experiencing homelessness within the past year. Authorities emphasize the critical need for increased testing and prevention efforts. Community organizations across Maine are ramping up initiatives to combat this crisis.

Just days ago, the Maine CDC reported a cluster of five cases discovered this year in Cumberland County among individuals who inject drugs. This latest case comes as representatives from the federal CDC are currently in Penobscot County for a three-week visit aimed at enhancing the local HIV response efforts.

HIV, which attacks the immune system and hampers the body’s ability to fight infections, is a serious health concern. Although there is no known cure, effective medication exists that can help control the disease. Alarmingly, Penobscot County typically sees only two new HIV cases per year, highlighting the unprecedented nature of this outbreak.

Additionally, nearly all reported cases in the county are linked to individuals who also tested positive for hepatitis C, a liver disease that can lead to severe complications, including liver cancer. The Maine CDC reports that 65% of individuals diagnosed with HIV during this outbreak were connected to care within 30 days of their diagnosis, and 57% have reached viral suppression at their last test.

Public health officials are urging residents to seek testing and treatment immediately, as the risk of transmission remains high. This outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by HIV and related health issues in communities across Maine and beyond.

As the situation develops, it is crucial for the public to stay informed and engaged. Health officials are committed to providing updates and resources to combat this urgent public health crisis.

Stay tuned for more updates as this situation evolves.
