UPDATE: A significant fire erupted atop the ore dock in Duluth earlier today, leading to swift action from the Duluth Fire Department. The blaze broke out at approximately 11:50 AM at the Canadian National Railway ore docks located on the 200 block of 37th Avenue West.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to find a maintenance shed “fully involved in fire” on Dock 6, which extends nearly half a mile into St. Louis Bay. The dock is an active facility crucial for loading ships with taconite pellets, making this incident a potential disruption to operations.

Responding to the urgent call, firefighters from four local stations worked diligently to prevent the flames from spreading to the surrounding ore docks. The quick response was instrumental in containing the fire, which left the maintenance shed with an estimated damage of $60,000.

“Thanks to the coordinated efforts of our firefighters and the support from Canadian National staff, we were able to secure a water source and quickly bring the fire under control,” stated a spokesperson from the Duluth Fire Department.

Fortunately, no injuries have been reported as a result of the fire. The Duluth Fire Marshal’s office is currently investigating the cause of the blaze. Canadian National Railway officials have yet to comment on the incident.

Built in 1918, Dock 6 is a vital part of Duluth’s shipping infrastructure, directly impacting local and regional economies. The dock’s neighbor, Dock 5, remains out of service, heightening the importance of Dock 6 for ongoing shipping activities.

As investigations continue, residents and businesses are urged to stay informed about any updates regarding the situation. The Duluth Fire Department is expected to provide further information as it becomes available.

This fire serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with industrial operations in the area. Stay tuned for more details as this story develops.
