UPDATE: The town of Gypsum, Colorado, has just announced the relaunch of the crucial I-70 Eagle Airport Interchange project, aimed at tackling soaring traffic issues and improving safety for local residents. This urgent initiative comes as population growth in western Eagle County has more than doubled since 2000, leading to overwhelming congestion on local roads and significant delays.

As of 2024, the Eagle County Regional Airport has seen record enplanements, further straining the existing interchanges in Gypsum and Eagle. The situation has become critical, with emergency response times slowed and local transit systems severely impacted. When accidents close I-70, local roads become inundated, paralyzing access to essential services and evacuation routes for nearly 20,000 residents living between Eagle and Gypsum.

The newly revived project aims to establish a new interstate access point halfway between the Gypsum and Eagle exits. This strategic development is designed to do more than simply improve traffic flow; it addresses vital safety concerns by providing faster emergency access and alternative routes during disasters. The proposed interchange will significantly reduce heavy truck traffic on already congested local roads, enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Data from transportation officials reveals promising projections: the addition of the new interchange could lead to a 20% traffic reduction at the Gypsum interchange and a 30% drop at the Eagle interchange. This will extend the lifespan of both interchanges by up to 15 years, ultimately saving taxpayers from costly expansions in the near future.

Officials from Eagle County have confirmed their commitment to this initiative, including it in the 2024/2025 Strategic Plan. The Intermountain Transportation Planning Region, a coalition of municipalities across five mountain counties, has also prioritized this project, with active collaboration from the Colorado Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.

The road ahead will require significant design finalization and funding acquisition, targeting a construction start date of 2029. The town of Gypsum, along with its partners, is dedicated to ensuring that this project meets the urgent needs of the community, promising a safer and more connected future for residents and travelers alike.
