UPDATE: A 57-year-old New York City visitor has been rescued after becoming lost in the treacherous wilderness of the Hudson Valley late yesterday afternoon. The incident unfolded near Samuel’s Point in Ulster County, triggering a significant winter rescue operation as temperatures plummeted.

Around 5:30 PM, the hiker set out to reach the summit of Samuel’s Point, a rugged, trailless peak within the Slide Mountain Wilderness. Relying on a cell phone map, they ventured into thick brush and rocky terrain. However, as daylight faded, cell service vanished, leaving the hiker disoriented and isolated.

Desperate for help, the visitor utilized the satellite messaging feature on their phone to alert a friend back in New York City instead of calling 911 directly. The friend promptly contacted emergency services, leading to a coordinated response from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Rescue teams deployed to the area, using coordinates provided by the friend. At approximately 7:45 PM, DEC Rangers located the lost hiker, who was cold, hungry, and exhausted. They provided essential warm layers and food before carefully guiding the visitor back through the dark wilderness. By 9:00 PM, everyone reached safety at the patrol vehicles.

Authorities emphasize the importance of preparation, especially during winter months when conditions can change rapidly in the Catskills. Rangers warn that even short hikes can turn dangerous without proper planning and equipment. Hikers are reminded to check weather and trail conditions before embarking on any outdoor adventure.
