Urgent: Winter Weather Advisory Issued for South Central PA
UPDATE: A winter weather advisory has just been issued for South Central Pennsylvania, warning residents of up to 3 inches of snow and hazardous conditions on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. The National Weather Service confirms that this advisory is in effect from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Fulton, Franklin, Adams, York, and Lancaster counties.
The weather service reports a mix of precipitation, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain, which is expected to create dangerous travel conditions. Total snow accumulations are forecasted to be between 1 and 3 inches, with light ice accumulations also likely. As roads, especially bridges and overpasses, become slick, commuters are urged to plan for treacherous travel conditions during the morning rush hour.
Officials recommend taking immediate precautions while driving. “Slow down and use caution while traveling,” warns the weather service. With winter weather causing over 6,000 fatalities and more than 480,000 injuries each year, safety is paramount. Road conditions may deteriorate rapidly, so it is critical to stay informed and adjust plans accordingly.
As temperatures hover near freezing, residents should assume icy conditions are present on roadways. Be vigilant for ice accumulation on power lines and tree branches, as these can snap and create additional hazards. If driving is unavoidable, opt for routes with fewer trees and power lines, and never approach downed power lines. Immediately call 911 if you encounter one.
To enhance safety during winter travel, the weather service provides these essential tips:
– **Share Your Plans:** Inform family or friends of your destination, route, and estimated arrival time.
– **Prepare Your Vehicle:** Ensure your gas tank is full and carry winter essentials such as a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a small shovel, and extra warm clothing.
– **Stay Calm if Stranded:** If you become stuck, remain in your vehicle and signal for help by attaching a cloth to your antenna or mirror. Use your dome light and flashers to increase visibility.
– **Be Mindful of Snow Plows:** Give snow plows plenty of room to operate safely and only pass them with a clear view ahead.
– **Check Road Conditions:** Before heading out, verify current road conditions to make informed travel decisions.
The latest conditions and updates are available by calling 511 for your state. Stay safe and informed as South Central Pennsylvania prepares for this winter weather event.
