Utah Mammoth Win Sixth Straight Game, Defeating Wild 6-2
UPDATE: The Utah Mammoth continue their impressive streak, winning their sixth consecutive game by defeating the Minnesota Wild 6-2 in a commanding performance on Saturday night in St. Paul, Minnesota. This victory solidifies the Mammoth’s position as a formidable force in the league.
Logan Cooley was the star of the night, scoring twice within the first 3:29 of the game, setting the tone early. Cooley, who recently showcased his skills with a hat trick against the Blues, opened the scoring just 56 seconds into the first period. He skillfully backhanded the puck out of midair, deftly beating Wild goalie Filip Gustavsson for an immediate 1-0 lead.
The Mammoth capitalized on a slashing penalty against Minnesota’s Yakov Trenin, allowing Cooley to extend the lead with a power-play goal at the 3:29 mark. Just moments later, Nick Schmaltz added to the Mammoth’s dominance, scoring his sixth goal of the season less than two minutes later to make it 3-0.
Minnesota fought back, with veteran Marcus Johansson scoring two goals, narrowing the gap to 3-2. Johansson’s first came with just 4:21 left in the first period, courtesy of a powerful one-timer from Zeev Buium. He added a second goal late in the second period on the power play, assisted by Vinnie Hinostroza, demonstrating his resilience despite entering the game with only one goal this season.
As the game progressed, JJ Peterka scored for Utah, pushing the score to 4-2 with 6:23 remaining in the third period. Schmaltz, riding a wave of momentum, netted his second goal, bringing his total to seven in the past five games and solidifying the Mammoth’s lead at 5-2.
Mammoth goalie Karel Vejmelka was pivotal, making 32 saves to keep Minnesota at bay. An empty-net goal from John Marino with just 5.1 seconds left sealed the victory for Utah.
The Mammoth are set to extend their winning streak to seven games as they head to Winnipeg on Sunday. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if Utah can maintain this electrifying momentum.
