Boeing Completes Redesign of Anti-Ice System for 737 MAX

Boeing has finalized the design and engineering of a new engine anti-ice system for the 737 MAX aircraft. This significant advancement comes as the company collaborates with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to establish a certification plan for the system. It will be included in new Boeing 737 MAX deliveries and retrofitted to existing aircraft, paving the way for the long-awaited certification of the 737 MAX 7 and 737 MAX 10 variants.

The redesign of the engine anti-ice system addresses crucial safety concerns that have led to years of delays for these models. The system is designed to direct air into the inlet cowl during icing conditions, preventing ice build-up. Now it’s defining the certification plan, getting the FAA to accept that certification plan.” The certification of the 737 MAX 7 and 737 MAX 10 is crucial for Boeing, as it will allow these aircraft to enter service and fulfill backlogged orders.

Negotiations with the FAA for a comprehensive certification plan are ongoing. The FAA will assess the proposal and either approve it or request modifications before granting certification. The 737 MAX 8 has been the flagship of the 737 MAX family, while the 737 MAX 7, primarily ordered by Southwest Airlines, has seen limited demand. In contrast, the 737 MAX 10 has garnered significant interest, with over 1,200 orders since its launch. This variant’s competitive economics are seen as vital for Boeing’s position in the narrowbody market, especially against the Airbus A321neo, which has accumulated over 7,000 orders.

Boeing aims to ramp up production to 42 737 MAX jets per month, signaling a robust recovery and increased market presence.
