Mexican Composer María Leonora Transforms Music into Ritual of Renewal
Mexican composer María Leonora is redefining the concert experience, turning her performances into immersive journeys that blend music with ancient rituals. With her upcoming series titled “Through All the Fire,” set for 2025, she invites audiences to explore themes of transformation and renewal, drawing parallels between music and the elemental power of fire.
The preparation for each concert resembles a ritualistic battle. In an interview before a recent presentation in Mexico City, Leonora described her process: “I look into the mirror and I sort of go to war. I brace myself to walk through the fire and whatever happens happens.” Her attire, layered and symbolic, complements her artistic vision, which emphasizes the dual nature of fire as both a destructive and regenerative force.
Leonora believes that both music and flames possess a unique ability to facilitate renewal. “A fire can burn and destroy,” she explained, “but if you make it through, you can be reborn.” This concept resonates throughout her performances, which are inspired by the ancient Mesoamerican practice of the temazcal, a pre-Hispanic steam bath integral to social and spiritual life in the region.
The temazcal served not only as a physical cleansing but also as a metaphorical passage. Archaeologist Agustín Ortiz explains that these structures were viewed as conduits between the living and the underworld, often situated near ceremonial ballcourts, highlighting their ritual significance. Today, they continue to be used, echoing their long-standing cultural importance.
Leonora’s personal relationship with music began at age 16 when she discovered its healing power during a challenging adolescence. “I can honestly say it saved my life,” she recalled, after embracing punk rock and stepping onto the stage for the first time. Since then, she has navigated various musical genres, ultimately leading to the creation of “Through All the Fire.”
The concert series aims to guide audiences from feelings of darkness toward a sense of renewal. “Music is a powerful tool that can connect you to Earth, to life, to the universe and to other people,” Leonora stated. The concerts are designed to be “immersive,” utilizing sound, lighting, and visuals to enhance the audience’s experience. Producer Diego Cristian Saldaña emphasized their goal: “We want the audience to feel enveloped in the experience of each song.”
Audience reactions further illustrate the impact of Leonora’s performances. A participant in a promotional video released by Mexico City’s Ministry of Culture shared that each of her concerts felt deeply gratifying, while another remarked on entering the venue fatigued but leaving invigorated. “We constantly encourage people to actively participate,” Leonora noted, urging attendees to engage in an internal journey.
“Through All the Fire” commences with an invitation to cross the “salt circle,” a symbolic gesture of leaving behind the outside world. As the concert progresses, Leonora’s repertoire evolves from themes of love to heartbreak, mirroring the emotional journey of the audience. Throughout the performance, she sheds her layers and makeup, symbolizing a cathartic transformation.
The culmination of the show is marked by a moment of rebirth. “As my character is exhausted, to the ground, it starts to breathe again,” Leonora expressed. This pivotal moment, likened to the experience within a temazcal, encourages attendees to express themselves freely, whether through howling, screaming, or engaging in personal rituals. The final song is described as a “first ray of light,” allowing the audience to reflect on their lives and move forward toward a brighter future.
Leonora’s dedication to weaving together ancient rituals with modern musical expression exemplifies her commitment to creating a transformative experience. Through “Through All the Fire,” she not only entertains but also facilitates a profound connection between her audience and their own journeys of renewal.
