The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has announced a full closure of northbound Interstate 5 (I-5) from October 24 to October 27, 2023. The closure will affect all northbound lanes between Interstate 8 and the Mission Bay Drive on-ramp. This roadwork is part of ongoing efforts to replace concrete slabs and enhance infrastructure.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead and consider alternate routes during this period. Recommended detours include State Route 163, State Route 15, and Interstate 805 to rejoin northbound I-5. The closure is scheduled to conclude with lanes reopening around 05:00 on October 27.

Several on-ramps will also be closed during this time. These include the Moore Street on-ramp to northbound I-5 in Old Town, the westbound I-8 Taylor Street on-ramp, and the Morena Boulevard off-ramp. On-ramps at Camino Del Rio West, Sea World Drive/Tecolote Road, and Clairemont Drive will also be inaccessible.

Despite the freeway work, all northbound Metropolitan Transit Service (MTS) bus routes to La Jolla and University Town Center (UTC) will continue to operate as scheduled. There will be a minor detour for Bus Route 30 from Old Town to La Jolla, while Route 105 servicing Old Town to UTC will remain unaffected, according to Caltrans.

This closure is part of the third phase of the I-5 Asset Management Project, which aims to improve safety and infrastructure along the busy corridor. Caltrans encourages motorists to stay informed about real-time road conditions through reliable sources such as the FOX 5/KUSI Live Traffic Map.

As roadwork progresses, officials emphasize the importance of safety and efficiency to minimize disruption for commuters and local residents.
