Ukraine Strikes Two Russian Oil Tankers in Black Sea Operation
Ukraine successfully targeted two oil tankers, known as part of Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’, using marine drones in the Black Sea. This operation, carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) alongside the Ukrainian navy, aims to disrupt Russia’s efforts to circumvent Western sanctions on oil exports.
The attack occurred on November 29, with the vessels identified as the Kairos and Virat. According to an SBU official who spoke on condition of anonymity, both tankers were empty and en route to the port of Novorossiysk, a key Russian oil terminal. Turkish authorities reported that explosions were heard near the Bosphorus Strait, leading to fires on the vessels and prompting rescue operations for their crews.
Video evidence shows that the strikes caused extensive damage to both tankers, effectively taking them out of service. The SBU official stated, “This will deal a significant blow to Russian oil transportation.” While specific details regarding the timing of the strikes were not disclosed, the operation highlights Ukraine’s ongoing campaign to target Russia’s maritime oil transport capabilities.
Ukraine has consistently advocated for stronger international measures against Russia’s ‘shadow fleet’. This network of tankers has been instrumental in enabling Moscow to export large volumes of oil, which in turn helps finance the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Ukrainian government argues that despite existing sanctions, these vessels continue to facilitate significant oil exports.
The operation signifies a notable escalation in Ukraine’s strategy to undermine Russia’s economic resources amidst the ongoing conflict. By targeting the shadow fleet, Ukraine aims to disrupt the flow of funds that sustain the Russian military efforts.
As the situation evolves, the implications of these strikes may resonate beyond the immediate operational impact, possibly influencing international perspectives on sanctions and maritime operations in the Black Sea region.
