Young Girl Uncovers 5th-Century Sword in Swedish Lake

An 8-year-old girl, Saga Vanecek, discovered a remarkable artifact while playing at Lake Vidöstern in southern Sweden. What began as a simple day trip in the summer of 2018 turned into an extraordinary archaeological find when she unearthed a sword believed to date back to the 5th century AD.

While exploring the lake bed, Vanecek initially mistook the object for a stick. In her recounting to The Guardian, she described how her curiosity took over when she noticed its unusual shape and texture. “I was crawling on the lake bed on my hands and knees, looking for stones to slide, when my hand and knee felt something long and hard buried in the clay and sand. I pulled it out and saw that it was different from the sticks or rocks I usually find,” she said. Excitedly, she called out to her father, shouting, “Daddy, I found a sword!”

After her father examined the object, he decided to contact the Jönköpings län Museum, where archaeologists confirmed it was indeed a relic from the early medieval period. Museum staff member Mikael Nordström noted that the sword measures approximately 85 cm in length and retains remarkable preservation of its wooden and leather components.

Significance of the Discovery

The discovery of this pre-Viking sword has sparked significant interest in the archaeological community. Located in Tännö, Lake Vidöstern is now regarded as a site that may hold further secrets from the past. Nordström mentioned that during a recent search, another prehistoric object, a brooch, was found in the same area. “We don’t know why these items are in the lake,” he stated, “but we suspect it might indicate a sacrificial site.”
