Kubota and Kilter Launch Next-Gen Weeding Robot for Farmers
URGENT UPDATE: Japanese agricultural giant Kubota has just announced an exciting partnership with Norwegian startup Kilter to co-develop and pilot the groundbreaking Kilter AX-1 ultra high-precision weeding robot. This innovative technology is set to revolutionize farming practices across Germany and the Netherlands, specifically targeting vegetable growers cultivating crops such as spinach, salad lettuces, herbs, celeriac, and strawberries.
The Kilter AX-1 utilizes a unique approach known as “Single Drop Technology,” which combines advanced AI weed recognition with an impressive 6 mm placement accuracy. This allows farmers to apply micro-doses of herbicides directly to weeds, drastically minimizing chemical usage and enhancing crop quality. According to Kilter, this method could enable growers to reduce herbicide consumption by up to 95%, marking a significant step towards sustainable agriculture.
“We had to design a droplet applicator that withstands years of dust, vibration, and temperature swings while ensuring precise droplet size and timing,” stated Anders Brevik, CEO of Kilter. This meticulous engineering process involved extensive agronomy knowledge and thousands of hours of field testing, highlighting the commitment to achieving higher yields with minimal environmental impact.
The partnership aligns with Kubota’s mission to promote sustainable farming solutions through its Smart Farming Solutions Division, which was launched in 2024. Kubota is actively training its European dealer network to integrate the Kilter AX-1 into its existing portfolio of agricultural technologies.
While the pricing details for the Kilter AX-1 remain undisclosed, the agriculture sector is on high alert as this technology promises to reshape farming practices and promote environmental sustainability. Farmers and stakeholders are encouraged to watch for further announcements regarding availability in North America and beyond.
As global agriculture faces increasing pressure to reduce chemical usage, this collaboration between Kubota and Kilter represents a pivotal moment in the industry. The potential for higher yields and improved crop quality without the heavy reliance on pesticides could not only enhance farmer profitability but also contribute to a healthier ecosystem.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story that is set to impact the future of farming significantly.
