Preserve Holiday Plant Beauty with Expert Care Tips
Holiday plants play a vital role in enhancing the festive atmosphere during the winter months. From the vibrant colors of poinsettias to the delightful aroma of fresh-cut Christmas trees, these plants contribute significantly to seasonal decor. To ensure they remain healthy and visually appealing throughout the holidays, Aaron Steil, a consumer horticulture extension specialist at Iowa State University, provides essential care tips.
Maintaining Freshness in Christmas Trees
A fresh-cut Christmas tree often serves as the focal point of holiday decorations. When selecting a tree, look for needles that are green, flexible, and remain attached when the branches are shaken. To enhance water absorption, cut approximately half an inch off the base of the trunk before placing it in the stand. Keep the stand filled with water at all times, as a tree may consume over a gallon on its first day.
Steil emphasizes, “Checking the water level daily is the most important thing you can do to keep your tree fresh.” Position the tree away from sources of heat, such as fireplaces or sunny windows, to prevent rapid drying.
Tips for Keeping Wreaths and Poinsettias Fresh
Live wreaths are another popular holiday decoration. To maintain their freshness, start with greenery that is neither dry nor losing needles. “The ideal conditions for wreaths are moist and cool,” noted Steil. While live wreaths typically last about a week indoors, they can remain vibrant for months outdoors in cooler temperatures. Keeping them out of direct sunlight and heat extends their lifespan, and using an anti-desiccant spray can help retain moisture.
Poinsettias, known for their striking red and green foliage, thrive in bright, indirect light and temperatures between 18°C and 24°C (65°F to 75°F). They should be kept away from drafts and heating vents to prevent leaf drop. Watering should be done only when the topsoil feels dry, avoiding water accumulation in decorative foil wraps. “Most poinsettias do not need abundant watering through December,” Steil cautioned, adding that overwatering is a leading cause of their decline.
Amaryllis bulbs are a low-maintenance option, producing large, attractive flowers. When planting, position the bulb in a pot with the upper third above the soil. Initial watering should be light until growth begins, after which the soil should be kept moist. Placing the pot in bright light leads to stronger, sturdier stalks. For added convenience, waxed amaryllis bulbs require no soil or watering—just a bright location to thrive.
Post-Holiday Plant Care
As the holiday season comes to an end, do not discard your holiday plants. While poinsettias and waxed amaryllis bulbs are typically composted, they can be nurtured to bloom again with proper care. Once the flowers of the amaryllis fade, cut the stalk while leaving the leaves intact. Continue watering and fertilizing to help the bulb store energy for the next season.
Steil explains, “Amaryllis can bloom year after year if you care for the bulb properly.” Furthermore, evergreen branches from wreaths and trees can be composted or chipped for mulch. Trees can be left outside to provide shelter for birds and animals during winter, or branches can be laid over perennial garden beds for added protection against the cold.
With a bit of attention, holiday plants can enhance the beauty of celebrations and be enjoyed long after the festivities are over.
