James “Jim” Gregory Danielson, a cherished educator and family man, passed away at his home in Vacaville on December 1, 2025, after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 77 years old. Surrounded by his wife, Dianne, and daughter, Kailyn, Jim’s final moments reflected the close-knit family life he valued throughout his years.

Born on May 15, 1948, to Jean and Edgar Danielson, Jim hailed from a family rooted in the early settlements of Suisun Valley. His early life saw him moving from Vallejo to Fairfield, before settling in his mother’s childhood home on the Mangels’ ranch. From a young age, Jim displayed a strong work ethic, assisting his father with fuel deliveries starting at age ten.

Jim’s upbringing was characterized by adventures in the orchards, where he and his friends rode bikes and searched for treasures. He later graduated from Chico State, earning his teaching credential, and returned to the Solano region to embark on his teaching career.

At Elmira and Callison Elementary Schools, Jim became affectionately known as “Mr. D.” His engaging teaching style made a lasting impact on his students. He was famous for his Friday treats of donuts and coffee for the office staff, as well as his playful spirit that included pranks with fellow teachers. Jim kept his classroom lively with games like “silent ball” and “the map game,” and he dedicated time to building creative projects, such as an entire Oregon Trail scene for open house. His commitment to his students was evident in his meticulous handwritten worksheets and his willingness to go the extra mile for their success.

Jim’s personal life was equally rich. He met Dianne Cretcher, a fellow teacher, in a fortuitous encounter that blossomed into a loving marriage lasting 38 years. Their devotion to each other was evident as they collaborated as co-teachers for three years after Dianne’s retirement. Together, they explored the beauty of nature, hiking through the redwoods and enjoying the shores of the ocean. Their vacations were filled with laughter, picnics, and wine tasting in the picturesque Napa and Suisun Valleys.

Known for his thoughtful gestures, Jim would surprise Dianne with jewelry and flowers, ensuring that every occasion was special. His love extended to his role as a father, where he dedicated time to nurturing his daughter, Kailyn. He taught her the art of blending colors and supported her through countless dance recitals. Even after she moved out, Jim continued to send her handwritten letters, showcasing his deep affection.

Predeceased by his parents and siblings, Jim leaves behind his beloved wife Dianne, daughter Kailyn Danielson (married to Ryan), son Greg Heinze (partnered with Steven), sister Kathy Sbaffi (married to Dave), brother-in-law Bill Cretcher (married to Tilly), and numerous nieces and nephews. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy will endure.

A memorial service in honor of Jim Danielson is scheduled for January 8, 2026, at 13:00 at Village 360 in Suisun Valley. All who wish to pay their respects are welcome. For those interested in attending, please text (707) 689-7134 for more information.

In memory of James Gregory Danielson, tributes can be made through floral arrangements or by planting a living memorial. His warmth, wisdom, and humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
