Robert Griffin III Defends Travis Hunter Against Skip Bayless’s Criticism
Controversy erupted this week when veteran sports commentator Skip Bayless questioned the timing of Travis Hunter‘s baptism, which occurred just hours before a game with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In a video posted on X, Bayless criticized Hunter’s decision, implying that prioritizing faith over football indicated a lack of commitment to the sport.
“There is no way Travis Hunter should’ve chosen to be baptized on the morning of a game,” Bayless stated. He suggested that the rookie’s focus on football was dwindling, claiming, “He is losing interest. He is mentally checking out on the Jags.” Bayless further argued that the Jaguars’ underutilization of Hunter was contributing to his perceived disengagement, particularly on defense, where he is considered exceptionally talented.
The backlash to Bayless’s remarks was swift, particularly from former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III. In a direct response on X, Griffin described Bayless’s comments as not only disrespectful but also indicative of arrogance. “Dear @RealSkipBayless,” Griffin wrote. “Questioning Travis Hunter’s focus and dedication to his team because he gave his life to God through baptism is not analysis. It’s arrogance.”
Griffin emphasized the importance of personal faith, stating, “A man finding salvation doesn’t need your approval. There’s never a wrong time to dedicate your life to God. Maybe instead of critiquing baptisms, you should try one. It might wash away all those bad takes.”
After the game, Hunter himself addressed the situation, clarifying his intentions regarding the baptism. “I’ve just got to let the game come to me,” he explained. “The coaches are trying to dial up some things for me. I’ve just got to continue to work and have the guys trust me.” Despite the Jaguars’ 20–12 loss, Hunter contributed to the game by playing on both offense and defense, recording four catches for 15 yards and two solo tackles.
This incident highlights the intersection of personal beliefs and professional sports, raising questions about the scrutiny athletes face regarding their priorities. While Bayless’s comments reflect a certain perspective within sports commentary, Griffin’s defense underscores a broader understanding of personal faith and its significance to athletes.
As the debate continues, it remains clear that for Hunter, the baptism was a pivotal moment of faith rather than a distraction from his responsibilities on the field.
