A contested election for a township supervisor seat in Douglass, Montana, is set for the upcoming vote, with incumbent Josh Stouch, a Republican, facing off against Democrat Dan Skok. The position carries a six-year term, and candidates were invited to respond to an online questionnaire published in The Mercury by October 14, 2023. Stouch did not provide a response, while Skok shared his background and views on pressing local issues.

Dan Skok, aged 74, previously served as a councilman in West Wyoming, Pennsylvania, from 2020 to 2024. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from King’s College Wilkes-Barre, earned in 1974, and a professional mixology certificate from Luzerne County Community College obtained in 1986. Skok has extensive experience in hospitality, having managed the Imperial Motor Inn in Wilkes-Barre for 16 years and the Hex Lounge for three years. He also owned and operated The Lighthouse Inn in West Wyoming for 33 years, navigating challenges such as the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his response to the questionnaire, Skok emphasized the importance of addressing funding challenges at both federal and state levels. He noted that Douglass Township is currently grappling with financial cutbacks and stressed the significance of applying for equipment grants. “Grants are more successful with larger numbers of folks benefiting,” he stated. Skok highlighted the impact of heavy rains on the community and advocated for responsible development practices.

He proposed that developments outside the township should manage water runoff effectively to prevent flooding in Douglass. “Flood-prone land can be safely used for recreational purposes,” he remarked, suggesting that he would collaborate with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection on relevant projects.

When discussing the balance between development and preserving open space, Skok passionately stated, “We have one of the most beautiful historic locations in the state, dare I say the nation.” He called for careful planning to avoid unsuitable developments near forested areas, warning that improper placement could lead to conflicts between residential spaces and commercial enterprises.

Addressing the issue of Pennsylvania’s ongoing budget challenges, Skok expressed concern about the implications for future generations. “We need a congressional and judicial authority that cares about the graduation class of 2026 and beyond,” he wrote, urging voters to support judges who prioritize community well-being. He emphasized that neglecting the needs of the majority could have dire consequences, stating, “People will die without health care.”

The upcoming election presents a critical opportunity for Douglass Township voters to choose between two distinct visions for the community’s future, with Skok advocating for a collaborative approach to governance and sustainable development. As the election date approaches, the focus will be on how voters respond to the candidates’ platforms and their understanding of the challenges facing the township.
