Gonzaga’s Tyon Grant-Foster Wins Injunction to Play This Season
BREAKING NEWS: Gonzaga forward Tyon Grant-Foster has just been granted a preliminary injunction by a Spokane County judge, enabling him to play for the Bulldogs in the upcoming season. This urgent development comes after the NCAA denied Grant-Foster’s appeal for an eligibility waiver earlier this month.
The ruling signifies a major victory for Grant-Foster, whose journey to this point has been fraught with challenges. Originally part of the high school class of 2018, he played two seasons at Indian Hills Community College before transferring to Kansas. He appeared in 22 games for the Jayhawks during the 2020-21 season and subsequently moved to DePaul. However, his career took a dramatic turn when he collapsed in the locker room at halftime of a game in 2021. After undergoing multiple heart surgeries, he was sidelined for 16 months.
In an inspiring comeback, Grant-Foster returned to the court with Grand Canyon, where he earned WAC Player of the Year honors by averaging 20.1 points and 6.1 rebounds. His leadership helped propel the Lopes to the NCAA tournament, marking the program’s first tournament win over Saint Mary’s. Last season, he maintained impressive averages of 14.8 points and 5.9 rebounds.
The NCAA had initially interpreted Grant-Foster’s two years at Indian Hills and two years at Grand Canyon as his four years of eligibility. However, his legal team argued that the blanket waiver granted to former junior college transfers last December should provide him with an additional year.
Today’s ruling is particularly significant for the Gonzaga Bulldogs as they gear up for the season. Grant-Foster is a strong candidate to start alongside preseason All-WCC first-teamers Graham Ike and Braden Huff. Following the judge’s decision, he rushed directly to Gonzaga’s exhibition game against Western Oregon, which commenced less than an hour later.
The No. 21 Gonzaga Bulldogs are set to open their regular season on November 3, 2023, against Texas Southern. This latest development not only impacts Grant-Foster’s career but also enhances Gonzaga’s prospects as they aim for a successful season.
