Authors Walk Out of School Amid Censorship Controversy
UPDATE: Authors Joanna Ho and Caroline Kusin-Pritchard abruptly left Country Club Elementary School just minutes before their scheduled presentation on October 17, 2023, after being asked not to discuss critical themes of their book related to book banning. The authors were on a Bay Area school tour promoting their book, “The Day the Books Disappeared,” which confronts the pressing issue of book banning. However, the principal of the school, part of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District, requested they avoid discussing certain topics, citing concerns over appropriateness for younger audiences.
“Book banning is real, it’s happening everywhere, it’s happening in California,” said Kusin-Pritchard, emphasizing the urgency of addressing this critical issue. Ho voiced her frustration, stating,
“Caroline was like this is completely out of our integrity; we won’t be changing our presentation if we’re giving the presentation.”
The district released a statement indicating that the authors’ focus on book banning was deemed unsuitable for students aged 4 to 9, specifically in transitional kindergarten to third grade. Officials expressed that while the book’s themes of kindness and empathy are essential, the focus on book banning might be too complex for younger children.
The authors, feeling compelled to maintain the integrity of their message, chose to leave rather than alter their presentation. Despite the district’s reservations, Kusin-Pritchard noted that they had previously received positive responses from thousands of students nationwide, highlighting the book’s ability to foster meaningful discussions.
