S.S. Rajamouli Revives Baahubali with The Epic for Theatrical Release
Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has redefined his acclaimed Baahubali saga with a fresh theatrical release titled Baahubali: The Epic. This new version distills the original two-part narrative, Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali: The Conclusion, into a single four-hour film. Set for release on October 31, 2023, the re-edited version marks the tenth anniversary of the first film, aiming to attract audiences who missed the original theatrical experience.
Rajamouli’s approach to condensing the expansive narrative was not merely a reissue. He aimed to enhance the cinematic experience while laying the groundwork for future projects within the ever-expanding Baahubali universe. The two films chronicle the journey of the warrior heir Baahubali, as he faces challenges reminiscent of epic tales such as Lord of the Rings.
In refining the storyline, Rajamouli faced the challenge of selecting which scenes to retain. He stated, “I wasn’t OK with trimming anything… But I have to tell a story. What exactly are the scenes where the story’s happening?” He focused on pacing to ensure that the film’s lavish visuals and climactic moments resonated with viewers. Among the content removed were certain romantic subplots and musical sequences deemed non-essential to the core narrative, resulting in a more action-oriented rendition of the Baahubali saga.
While Rajamouli resisted major overhauls, he took the opportunity to subtly enhance the film’s visual effects and improve the overall rhythm. He acknowledged that some changes might be “not largely noticeable,” but aimed to please dedicated fans who have revisited the originals numerous times.
Rajamouli views the Baahubali franchise as a world beyond a simple two-film narrative. Reflecting on its unprecedented success, which shattered box-office records in India, he remarked, “We just didn’t create Baahubali, the film. We created a world of Baahubali. We are always trying to expand it and take it further.”
Despite facing criticism over the films’ political and cultural interpretations, Rajamouli remains unfazed. He differentiated between general critiques and those that attempt to infer underlying intentions, stating, “There are two kinds of criticism… One where people go to the movie and just don’t like it… and another where they try to find some intentions behind the filmmaker, which is quite boring.”
The new release also signals the impending arrival of Baahubali: The Eternal War, a 3D CG animated sequel that Rajamouli confirmed will be a “proper movie.” A teaser for this upcoming feature will accompany screenings of The Epic. Unlike previous Baahubali projects for streaming platforms, which fell short of Rajamouli’s standards, this animated endeavor aims to capture the full scope of the beloved franchise.
Currently, Rajamouli is engaged in a separate film project with Priyanka Chopra and Telugu star Mahesh Babu, tentatively titled GEN 63. He emphasized a commitment to focusing on one project at a time, despite receiving attention from Hollywood studios following the global success of RRR.
With the release of Baahubali: The Epic, Rajamouli not only celebrates a milestone but also ensures that the legacy of Baahubali continues to thrive. His dedication to storytelling and the expansion of this cinematic universe remains unwavering as he prepares to bring audiences back into the extraordinary world he has created.
