Beck Center Youth Theater Brings ‘James And The Giant Peach’ to Life
The Beck Center for the Arts Youth Theater is set to enchant audiences with its production of Roald Dahl’s “James And The Giant Peach,” running from March 20 to 29, 2024, at the Senney Theater in Lakewood, Ohio. This musical adaptation explores themes of courage, creativity, and the significance of found family, featuring a cast of 68 talented students aged 6 to 17.
Director Patrick Ciamacco, who is new to this classic children’s tale, expressed his surprise upon discovering the story’s darker undertones. “I actually didn’t read the book as a kid,” he admitted. “I knew the title, but didn’t really know what it was about. I just figured it was some fluffy, fun, goofy story.” Ciamacco’s initial assumption transformed as he delved into the narrative, which begins with the tragic murder of the titular character’s parents by a rogue rhino in London.
“This is definitely going to be a little different than some of the other children’s shows I’ve directed,” he remarked, recognizing the unique blend of light-heartedness and depth in Dahl’s work.
The production promises a rich musical experience, featuring a score crafted by the same Tony Award-winning songwriting team behind hits like “Dear Evan Hansen” and “The Greatest Showman.” Ciamacco noted the range of musical styles, from heartfelt ballads to vibrant anthems, ensuring there is something for everyone. “We were joking around after rehearsal the other day that the song ‘Plump and Juicy’ was stuck in our heads,” he laughed. “I literally woke up singing it the other day and thinking, I gotta listen to another song. It’s catchy.”
“James And The Giant Peach” follows the adventures of a young boy who embarks on a journey of self-discovery, encountering friendship and bravery along the way. The heartfelt story resonates with audiences of all ages, making it a perfect choice for family entertainment.
This production not only showcases the talent of the young performers but also highlights the commitment of the Beck Center for the Arts to nurture creativity and artistic expression in the community. As the opening date approaches, excitement continues to build for what promises to be a memorable theatrical experience in Lakewood.
