Commanders Aim for Redemption Against Seahawks in Key Matchup
The Washington Commanders are preparing for a crucial matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night, seeking to halt their three-game losing streak. With a current record of 3-5, the Commanders face a formidable challenge against a Seahawks team that is riding a two-game winning streak, bringing their record to 5-2. The Seahawks are currently tied with the Los Angeles Rams at the top of the NFC West, just ahead of the San Francisco 49ers.
Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald expressed optimism about his team’s performance heading into the game. “We’re doing a lot of great things in terms of finishing plays, and there’s more to be had in really all three phases,” Macdonald stated on Wednesday. He added that he is excited about the team’s current form and potential for growth.
The Commanders are coming off a disappointing 28-7 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, where they were unable to capitalize on a first half that ended in a 7-7 tie. This loss has left them trailing the Philadelphia Eagles by three games in the NFC East. With the Detroit Lions set to visit next week, this game against Seattle is pivotal for Washington’s playoff aspirations.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels, who missed the last game due to a right hamstring injury, expressed hope about his potential return. “If everything goes right, hopefully I’m out there Sunday night,” Daniels remarked. The news was less favorable for wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who, after returning from a four-game absence, re-injured his right quad during the Chiefs game and will not play against the Seahawks. Head coach Dan Quinn commented, “Bummed for him. Bummed for us. (It’s) just tough.”
In addition to McLaurin’s absence, the Commanders will also be without left tackle Laremy Tunsil (hamstring) and kicker Matt Gay (back), both of whom did not practice on Wednesday. Quinn indicated that more information regarding their status would be available after Friday’s practice.
On the defensive side, Washington’s unit, which includes former Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner, has struggled, allowing an average of 372.8 yards per game, ranking 27th in the NFL. Despite intercepting Patrick Mahomes twice in the first half of the previous game, the defense conceded touchdowns on three consecutive drives in the second half. Quinn noted improvements in tackling and tracking, emphasizing the need for continued development.
The Seahawks, meanwhile, will look to bounce back from a less-than-stellar performance by quarterback Sam Darnold, who completed 17 of 31 passes for 213 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in their latest win over the Houston Texans. Rookie wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has made a significant impact recently, averaging eight catches for 139 yards and a touchdown over the past three games. Kicker Jason Myers has also been reliable, converting 13 of 17 field-goal attempts, including four from over 50 yards.
If Daniels is unable to play, Marcus Mariota would step in for his fourth start of the season. Mariota threw for 213 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the loss against the Chiefs. Macdonald commented on the team’s preparedness regardless of who is at quarterback, stating, “Both operate their offense really well, so the type of plays we’re going to be practicing against and preparing for wouldn’t really change based on who’s playing.”
In injury updates for the Seahawks, cornerback Devon Witherspoon participated fully in practice, while outside linebacker Derick Hall was limited. Wide receiver and kick returner Dareke Young did not practice due to a quad injury. Additionally, the Seahawks have signed former Chicago Bears, Atlanta Falcons, and New Orleans Saints receiver/kick returner Velus Jones Jr. to their practice squad. Rookie fullback Robbie Ouzts returned to practice, but safety Julian Love (hamstring) did not participate and may miss the game.
The last encounter between these two teams was a closely contested affair, with the Seahawks edging out the Commanders 29-26 on a last-second field goal by Myers on November 12, 2023. As the teams prepare for their upcoming clash, both will be focused on securing a vital win to bolster their playoff hopes.
