FAA Cuts 10% of Flights at 40 Airports Amid Government Shutdown
URGENT UPDATE: The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has just announced a significant cut in flight capacity at 40 major airports across the United States, following the government shutdown. Effective starting Friday, October 15, 2023, travelers should brace for a potential surge in delays and cancellations as the FAA implements a 10% reduction in flight volumes.
This drastic measure, communicated by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, affects several of the nation’s busiest airports, including those in Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. The phased reductions will fully take effect by next week, with estimates suggesting up to 1,800 flights could be impacted on the initial day alone.
As the shutdown persists, the FAA warns that reductions could exceed 10% if staffing issues worsen for air traffic controllers and TSA agents. Duffy emphasized that these cuts are necessary to maintain passenger safety amid the ongoing crisis.
Travelers are already feeling the effects. On Wednesday, over 4,100 flights were delayed nationwide, alongside 171 cancellations, according to data from FlightAware. Furthermore, cargo traffic will also be affected, particularly at airports like Memphis and Louisville, critical hubs for delivery services.
The aviation industry is sensitive to disruptions, and even minor changes can lead to widespread chaos. A single weather delay or air traffic control disturbance can ripple across the entire system. Passengers are strongly urged to check their flight status with carriers before heading to the airport, as more schedule changes are expected.
Stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops. The implications of these cuts are far-reaching, impacting not just travelers but also the logistics of air freight and package deliveries across the country.
