UPDATE: Rivian has just revealed groundbreaking details about its highly anticipated 2026 R2 midsize SUV, set to begin production in early 2026. These innovations could significantly impact the EV market and how consumers interact with their vehicles.

In a third-quarter letter to shareholders, Rivian announced the introduction of a new energy management control module (EMCM) that consolidates multiple technologies, including a bidirectional charger. This feature allows the R2 to not only charge from the grid but also supply power to homes, potentially revolutionizing energy use for EV owners. This exciting capability promises a “cost-effective power storage solution” for customers purchasing the R2, which is projected to retail for under $50,000.

The R2 will also feature a new 4695 battery cell design that boasts six times the energy capacity of the 2170 cells currently utilized in Rivian’s R1 models. While the exact kWh capacity has yet to be disclosed, Rivian estimates the R2 will achieve an impressive 330-mile range on a single charge.

Production progress is also noteworthy. Rivian’s Normal, Illinois factory has completed assembly of the R2 body shop and a 1.1 million square foot general assembly building. A nearby 1.2 million square foot supplier park and logistics center will support the R2, with assembly expected to ramp up to 155,000 units annually. The first validation builds are slated for completion by the end of 2025, with pre-production units anticipated to hit the assembly line in early 2026.

Rivian’s advancements signal a shift in the competitive EV landscape, particularly with their focus on affordability and innovative technology. As the company steps closer to its launch timeline, consumers and investors alike will be watching closely for further developments.
