Susanna Reid, the well-known presenter of Good Morning Britain, has shared her impressive weight loss journey, shedding 1.5 stone without stepping foot in a gym. The 54-year-old has been open about her lifestyle changes, particularly during the challenging period of the coronavirus lockdowns, when many people, including Reid, experienced weight gain.

Reid revealed that she struggled to lose the extra pounds she gained during the lockdown. In a candid discussion with former co-presenter Piers Morgan in December 2018, she explained her decision to forgo gym workouts. “I stopped going to the gym; I found it made me too hungry,” she said. “I’ve levelled out, I lost a stone-and-a-half and that’s enough, and I don’t go to the gym.”

Health Consultation Sparks Change

Reid’s journey towards a healthier lifestyle began with a visit to her general practitioner regarding persistent skin issues. Her doctor pointed out that she was at the upper limit of the healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) for her height and advised her to lose weight. Following this guidance, Reid focused on improving her diet by eliminating snacking during her demanding work schedule. She reported feeling “fantastic” after making these changes.

The early hours of her work schedule, which require her to wake up at 4 a.m., contributed to her cravings. “It can creep up without you noticing,” she explained to ITV colleague Lorraine Kelly. “What I did was cut out snacking. Waking up so early, you’re in a sort of energy deficit. All your body can think is ‘have toast, have biscuits, have calories’, and you can pile weight on really quickly.”

Reid’s dietary adjustments included a focus on fish while limiting her intake of other meats. In 2019, she also made the significant decision to eliminate alcohol from her life due to its detrimental effects on her skin. “I’m rather glad I’ve given up drink because lockdown drinking, the pandemic prosecco, has been a serious issue,” she noted in an interview with The Times.

Reid explained that drinking had exacerbated her skin condition, leading to issues such as flushed skin and permanent scarring from flare-ups. “I was concerned because my skin was flushed, I kept getting flare-ups and blemishes, and they were leaving red scars,” she stated.

Commitment to Sobriety

The commitment to a teetotal lifestyle has continued, even during her 50th birthday celebrations, where she opted not to drink. Reid acknowledged that her sobriety has not been without its challenges; she humorously recalled how Morgan dubbed her “the world’s biggest bore” as a result of her lifestyle changes.

As a prominent figure on television since the launch of Good Morning Britain in 2014, Reid’s candidness about her health journey has resonated with many viewers. Her story not only highlights the impact of lifestyle choices on health but also serves as an inspiration for others facing similar challenges.

Through her experience, Susanna Reid emphasizes that significant changes can be made without the need for conventional methods like gym workouts, focusing instead on mindful eating and lifestyle adjustments.
