Remembering Christopher Harrington: Advocate for Affordable Housing
Christopher John Harrington, a dedicated advocate for affordable housing in West Marin, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025, after a five-year battle with cancer. Surrounded by family and friends, he left behind a legacy that spans several decades, marked by significant contributions to his community.
Born in London during the blitz of 1943, Harrington’s early life took an unexpected turn when his widowed mother relocated him to Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of two. There, he became part of the expansive and lively Harrington Clan, which offered him numerous youthful adventures. His family later moved to California, where Harrington graduated from Cal-Berkeley and served in the Marine reserves during the Vietnam War.
Harrington’s professional journey began as a route driver for Coca-Cola before he transitioned into real estate. He obtained his real estate and broker licenses, later practicing commercial real estate with Walter Shorenstein in San Francisco. Eventually, Harrington moved to Stinson Beach, where he became the owner and broker of Oceanic Realty. After a successful career in real estate, he shifted his focus to community service, dedicating his efforts to creating affordable housing in the area.
His commitment to affordable housing was exemplified through his leadership in several initiatives. Harrington played a pivotal role in the creation of Measure W, which aimed to ensure that tourist revenue would address housing needs in West Marin. He was also a founder of the Stinson Beach Affordable Housing Group and collaborated with the Bolinas Community Land Trust and the Community Land Association of West Marin (CLAM) to secure properties in Stinson Beach. These efforts have resulted in the preservation of affordable housing options for local residents.
Harrington is survived by his wife, Sandra Cross, with whom he shared over 40 years of partnership. He is also remembered by his daughter, Melissa Crawford, and his beloved granddaughters, Ella and Haley. His brothers, Scott, Gerri, and Gene, along with their families, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, will also cherish his memory.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Chris Harrington Fund through the Bolinas Community Land Trust. A celebration of his life will take place at the Stinson Beach Community Center on November 23, 2025, at 14:00. Harrington’s dedication to his community and his family will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
