Oklahoma Photographer Showcases Black Rodeo Heritage in New Exhibit
UPDATE: Oklahoma photographer Jakian Parks has unveiled a powerful new exhibit titled ‘The Black Land: Rituals and Rejoicing’, showcasing the rich heritage of black rodeos in Oklahoma. The exhibit opened earlier this month at Oklahoma Contemporary and highlights the deep-rooted connections between land ownership, horsemanship, and community pride.
Parks, known for his unique portrayal of black cowboy culture, stated, “This is like a homecoming for me.” His passion for rodeos began in childhood, and now he captures the spirit of these events through stunning photography. “I just wanted to ride,” he reminisced, recalling his experiences at local rodeos.
Working closely with creative partner Chloe Flowers, Parks meticulously selected images documenting the essence of black rodeos, including moments from the annual Boley Rodeo and various community events in Jones and Arcadia. “He has a vision. He gives it to me, and my job is to make it happen,” Flowers explained about their collaborative process.
The exhibit not only reflects a celebration of culture but also serves as a crucial reminder of Oklahoma’s long and complex black history. Executive Director Trent Riley emphasized the significance of these images, stating they connect the historical narrative to the modern-day black cowboy experience. “This is a historic part of our state,” he asserted.
Through this exhibit, Parks aims to open “windows, barn doors, and rodeo gates” to a different shade of the West—one filled with determination and pride. The photographs on display resonate with audiences, allowing them to engage with the stories behind each image.
For those interested in experiencing this remarkable exhibition, visit Oklahoma Contemporary to see how Parks captures the beauty and struggle of black rodeo culture. This is an urgent moment for both art and history, celebrating a community that continues to thrive against the odds.
