Antonio Brown Waives Extradition, Faces Attempted Murder Charge
UPDATE: Former NFL star Antonio Brown has waived his extradition to Florida, paving the way for his return to Miami as he faces serious legal troubles, including an attempted murder charge. This decision was confirmed during a brief court hearing on Friday, October 13, 2023.
Brown, 37, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals in Dubai and brought to the Essex County Jail in New Jersey, where he is currently awaiting pickup by Florida authorities. According to Carmen Martin, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, “Brown is back at the Essex County Jail in Newark where he is awaiting pickup by Florida authorities.”
The charges stem from a shocking incident that occurred on May 16, 2023, following a celebrity boxing match. Brown allegedly grabbed a handgun from security and fired two shots at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, a man he had previously fought. Nantambu reported that one of the bullets grazed his neck.
“Cellphone video obtained from social media showed Mr. Brown with the firearm in his hand advancing toward Mr. Nantambu,”
the arrest affidavit states, detailing that the footage captured Brown firing the shots just feet away from Nantambu.
Initially, law enforcement did not identify Nantambu as a victim, delaying Brown’s arrest until May 21, 2023, when he fully disclosed the events to the police. It remains unclear why Brown was detained in New Jersey instead of Florida or the timeline leading to his arrest.
In a previous post on social media, Brown claimed he was defending himself from multiple attackers who attempted to steal his jewelry. The attempted murder charge in Florida is serious, with a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a possible $10,000 fine if convicted.
Brown enjoyed a successful NFL career, highlighted by his performance with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and being part of the team that won the Super Bowl in 2021. However, his career has been marred by legal issues, including accusations of battery and domestic violence.
As this situation develops, all eyes will be on Brown as he prepares to face serious charges in Florida. What happens next could have significant implications for his future and legal standing.
Stay tuned for updates on this evolving story as authorities continue to address the serious allegations against the former football star.
