Lynsey Addario’s “Love + War” Documentary Launches on Disney+
UPDATE: Renowned war photographer Lynsey Addario takes center stage in a groundbreaking new documentary, “Love + War,” now streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. This urgent film provides a raw look into Addario’s dual life as a celebrated photojournalist and devoted mother, highlighting the stark contrasts she navigates daily.
In the more than 25-year career of Addario, she has braved countless conflicts and humanitarian crises, capturing harrowing moments that have earned her multiple Pulitzer Prizes. Her powerful images tell the stories of war-torn regions, but “Love + War” reveals her personal journey, including her experiences of being kidnapped and her coverage of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Addario explains her motivation for stepping in front of the camera, stating, “The timing seemed right… I never felt like it was nuanced enough.” She aims to present a more complete portrayal of women in war journalism, moving beyond the glorified male perspectives often seen in media.
Co-director Chai Vasarhelyi reflects on the unique collaboration with Addario, highlighting their mutual understanding of the challenges faced by women in the field. “There’s almost instantly a shorthand about that,” she notes, emphasizing the film’s focus on the emotional weight of balancing professional demands with family life.
The documentary features gripping scenes, including one where Addario captures a young boy riding his bike amidst the chaos of gunfire. “I have to constantly weigh, ‘what will I risk my life for?'” she shares, underscoring her commitment to telling the stories of civilians affected by conflict.
At home, Addario navigates the everyday struggles of parenting her two sons, Lucas, nearly 14, and a six-year-old, as they grapple with the realities of her dangerous profession. She candidly discusses the delicate balance of honesty and protection when addressing their concerns about her safety: “I don’t want to lie. But I also don’t want to be like, ‘yeah it’s all luck.’”
As Addario reflects on her experiences, she emphasizes the importance of remembering the people behind her photographs. “For me, it’s really about paying tribute to the people that I photograph,” she states, revealing the emotional toll of her work.
Vasarhelyi articulates the film’s core message, stating, “We kept on just returning back to Lynsey’s truth… it’s the good fight and the moral courage it takes.” The title, “Love + War,” encapsulates the intertwining of her personal and professional worlds, emphasizing that these elements cannot be separated.
This compelling documentary not only sheds light on the realities of war journalism but also offers a poignant look at the sacrifices made by those who cover these harrowing stories.
Don’t miss “Love + War“, now available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. This powerful film is a must-watch for anyone seeking to understand the complexities of love and sacrifice in the face of conflict.
