A tornado struck Southern Brazil on November 3, 2023, resulting in at least five fatalities and injuring 432 people. The Paraná State Government reported that four of the deaths occurred in Rio Bonito do Iguaçu, while one was confirmed in Guarapuava. The storm caused significant destruction, collapsing various structures and trapping individuals inside. Ongoing search and rescue operations were initiated on Saturday to locate and assist those affected.

Authorities have mobilized the Military Fire Department of Paraná and local health services to provide medical assistance to the injured. Among those hurt, nine individuals sustained serious injuries requiring immediate attention. On Saturday morning, government officials from both local and federal levels visited the impacted areas to assess the damage and coordinate recovery efforts.

Assessment and Response Efforts

The tornado, initially classified as an EF-2, may be reclassified as an EF-3 following a thorough evaluation of the destruction it caused. Wind gusts during the tornado were recorded between 111 and 155 mph. In response to this disaster, the state government has implemented emergency measures across the region. As of Friday, November 3, 14 cities within Paraná were declared to be in a state of emergency due to the extreme weather conditions.

Throughout November, several cities in Paraná have experienced a series of heavy rains, storms, gales, and hail, prompting the state government to allocate resources for victim assistance and reconstruction efforts. The community is now in the midst of recovery as officials focus on restoring essential services and supporting displaced individuals.

As rescue teams continue to work, the extent of the tornado’s impact remains a priority for local authorities. The Paraná State Government is committed to providing ongoing support to those affected as they navigate the aftermath of this devastating event.
