Minnesota United Stuns Seattle in Epic MLS Playoff Thriller
BREAKING: In a jaw-dropping turn of events, Minnesota United has triumphed over the Seattle Sounders in a nail-biting penalty shootout, securing their place in the MLS Cup Playoffs Western Conference semifinal. This thrilling finish unfolded on Saturday night at Allianz Field, with Minnesota battling back from a two-goal deficit to win 7-6 in penalties.
The match started dramatically, with Seattle scoring two goals within the first eight minutes, leaving Minnesota fans in despair. However, the Loons rallied, becoming the first team in MLS history to score both the tying and go-ahead goals after being reduced to 10 players following a red card.
Loons head coach Eric Ramsay described the night as “insane.” He praised his players for their resilience: “For where we were at halftime to be where we are now is a phenomenal situation. The players showed just an unbelievable level of togetherness and spirit.”
In the 88th minute, Seattle made a desperate push, equalizing with a goal from Jordan Morris off a corner kick. But Minnesota responded decisively in the penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair scoring his kick and denying Seattle’s Andrew Thomas, who hit the crossbar.
Earlier in the match, Minnesota’s Joaquín Pereyra ignited hope with a sensational free-kick goal in the 19th minute, bringing the score to 2-1. “I had to score this goal,” Pereyra stated, reflecting on his practice the day before. This moment marked a turning point for Minnesota, who had struggled in the earlier games of the series.
Despite facing a red card for Joseph Rosales just before halftime, the Loons equalized in the second half thanks to a header by Jefferson Díaz in the 62nd minute, further demonstrating their fighting spirit.
With this victory, Minnesota advances to face the winner of the San Diego-Portland series, scheduled for November 22 or 23. The atmosphere at Allianz Field was electric as fans celebrated this historic comeback.
As the Loons prepare for their next match, they have proven they can overcome adversity, and their remarkable journey in the playoffs continues. Stay tuned for updates on their next challenge!
