Oklahoma Restaurants Offer Free Meals Amid SNAP Shutdown Crisis
UPDATE: As the federal government shutdown halts SNAP benefits for thousands of families in Oklahoma City, local restaurants are stepping in to provide urgent support by offering free meals to those affected. Restaurants like Taquitos Feliz have launched initiatives to help families struggling to feed their children due to the suspension of food stamp benefits, which began earlier this month.
Owner Roberto Brambila of Taquitos Feliz reported a surge in customers, stating, “I’m pretty sure it was well over 100 people” seeking assistance. Despite the increased business, Brambila emphasized that this generosity is not profitable for his establishment. “No, not in this case,” he acknowledged.
The plight of families relying on SNAP benefits has become increasingly dire, prompting Brambila to take action. “I like to help them out whenever I can. And I thought this was a really good opportunity for us to do something nice,” he said. Families can receive a full meal of their choice—tacos, burritos, or quesadillas—at no cost by simply showing an EBT card.
The initiative highlights the power of community support amidst political turmoil. Regular customer Gil Torres expressed his gratitude, stating, “Thank you for what you’re doing,” as he returned to the restaurant after withdrawing cash to help fund the meals. “This isn’t a time to be political. It’s a time to be human. And let’s help our fellow humans out,” Torres added, emphasizing the importance of compassion during this challenging time.
In addition to Taquitos Feliz, other restaurants across the metro are also stepping up. Locations of Taco Casa are providing free meals for children who present an EBT card at the register. Similarly, Oliver’s Pizzeria will distribute free large one-topping pizzas this Monday, October 2, from 2 PM to 6 PM for anyone with a valid SNAP or EBT card.
As the government shutdown continues, the community response highlights a critical need for support. Families affected by the loss of SNAP benefits are grateful for the generosity of local businesses stepping in to fill the gap.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops. The Oklahoma community’s resilience and willingness to support one another during these trying times serve as a powerful reminder of humanity’s strength.
