Kutztown Students Set to Dazzle with ‘Footloose’ Musical Nov. 21-22
UPDATE: The Kutztown Area School District is gearing up for an exciting production of “Footloose the Musical,” taking place on November 21 and 22 at the Kutztown High School auditorium. Featuring beloved hits like “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” this high-energy show promises to captivate audiences with its vibrant storytelling and dynamic performances.
The musical tells the story of Ren McCormack, a city teen who moves from Chicago to the small town of Bomont, where he discovers that dancing is banned. Determined to bring joy and healing to the community, Ren rallies his peers to challenge the oppressive rules. This celebration of freedom and friendship is expected to resonate deeply with attendees, especially in a tight-knit community like Kutztown.
Director LeAnne Zettlemoyer emphasized the emotional depth of “Footloose,” stating,
“It’s about relationships, letting go of the past, and the healing and forgiveness that can happen when we take the time to listen to one another.”
The production includes over 70 students from grades 6-12, showcasing not only acting talent but also skills in stage management, sound, and technical support.
The show is a collaborative effort involving students, directors, parent volunteers, and school staff. Zettlemoyer noted that participation in the musical fosters invaluable skills for students, including teamwork, leadership, and cooperation. “These skills will be valuable to the students, no matter what type of future career they end up pursuing,” she added.
The cast is led by Elliot Johnson as Ren McCormack and Olivia Vos as Ariel Moore, alongside a talented ensemble of featured dancers who will bring the iconic dance numbers to life. Johnson expressed the transformative power of musical theatre: “It allows kids to go outside of their comfort zones and feel a true sense of freedom.”
In addition to the main performances, a special event will take place on November 20, featuring a complimentary dinner for senior citizens at 4:30 PM, followed by a preview performance at 6 PM. Reservations for the preview are limited to the first 150 people who call 610-683-7361 ext. 7555.
Tickets for the main shows are priced at $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors, available for purchase online at [Kutztown Musical Ticket Sales](https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/KASD/5935) or at the auditorium lobby one hour before each performance.
