Rumors of PS5 Jailbreak Drive Prices of Star Wars Game Skyward
Rumors surrounding a potential jailbreak for the PlayStation 5 have led to a surge in prices for a relatively obscure video game, Star Wars: Racer Revenge. This re-release, originally a 2002 title, has become highly sought after due to claims from hackers that it could serve as a crucial tool in gaining access to the console’s deeper functionalities.
The speculation began when a group of hackers announced that they are close to breaking through the PS5’s security measures. They indicated that the PlayStation 4 version of Star Wars: Racer Revenge, a game that was reissued by Limited Run Games in 2019, could be instrumental in executing this jailbreak. The re-release initially sold for $14.99 for the standard edition and $37.99 for the Premium Edition.
Star Wars: Racer Revenge is a podracing game set in the Star Wars universe, occurring after the events of Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Players can select from various alien racers, each possessing unique podracing capabilities. The game achieved a score of 73 on Metacritic, reflecting a positive reception among gamers. Notably, Racer Revenge introduces a permadeath feature, enhancing its competitive edge by allowing players to eliminate rival racers permanently.
Recent claims by hackers suggest that the PS4 disc version of Racer Revenge can be utilized to inject code into the PS5 system. This method reportedly remains impervious to software patches, making it an attractive option for those seeking to exploit the console’s capabilities. As the news of this potential jailbreak spreads, the demand for copies of Star Wars: Racer Revenge has skyrocketed.
Currently, listings on eBay show prices exceeding $250 per disc, significantly higher than the original retail price. Retailers such as Amazon are sold out, prompting some consumers to consider importing copies from other regions, although these too are experiencing inflated prices due to tariffs. Given the limited production run of the game, it is likely that prices will continue to rise.
While Limited Run Games has not responded to inquiries regarding the situation, fans are expressing their desire for a reprint of the game. However, the company’s policy traditionally prohibits restocking sold-out titles, leaving many hopeful players in a lurch.
For those still interested in the game, it remains available for purchase through the PlayStation Store at a more manageable price, although it cannot be utilized for hacking purposes. As the community reacts to these developments, the intersection of nostalgia and technology continues to shape the gaming landscape in unexpected ways.
