Baxter Woman Transforms Home for Annual Candyland Christmas
In Baxter, Minnesota, Kathy Fitzpatrick has turned her home into a vibrant Candyland this holiday season, captivating visitors with an array of festive decorations. Each year, Fitzpatrick dedicates nearly a year to collecting new ornaments and creating an enchanting atmosphere that her family eagerly anticipates during their Christmas celebrations.
Fitzpatrick’s tradition began several years ago, evolving into a cherished family ritual. Each Thanksgiving weekend, the Fitzpatrick family gathers to brainstorm ideas for the upcoming Christmas theme. Once the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren pitch their suggestions, Fitzpatrick selects a winner. She then dives into shopping for decorations, beginning her search as soon as items go on sale on January 2. Utilizing platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, she secures crafting supplies to develop her holiday wonderland.
This year’s theme, Candyland Christmas, brings an explosion of color and whimsy to her home. Lollipops, gingerbread houses, giant gummy bears, snow cones, and trees adorned with pastel candy decorations fill nearly every corner of the house. Fitzpatrick embraces her passion for the season, stating, “I get to kick off the season for the whole family.”
Creating a Magical Experience
With around 25 family members expected for their Thanksgiving celebration, Fitzpatrick aims to create a magical experience for everyone. “Nothing has to be perfect. It just has to be fun and magical for the kids,” she explained. This year, children will enjoy three different Candyland-themed games. A traditional board game is available, alongside a custom tabletop version featuring oversized markers fashioned from spice containers.
Adding to the excitement, Fitzpatrick has crafted a larger Candyland board that winds through her home, using colored foam squares. This interactive game leads participants from the entrance through various rooms, culminating in the kitchen. Giant laminated colored cards accompany the board, and children will act as their own game pieces, navigating through the festive environment.
In keeping with the Candyland theme, every family member will receive themed T-shirts to match the decor, further enhancing the festive atmosphere.
A Community Engagement Opportunity
After their family celebration, Fitzpatrick is considering opening her home to the community, allowing others to experience the Candyland magic. She plans to charge a small fee for guests to play the game, take photos among the decorations, and even decorate gingerbread men.
Additionally, Fitzpatrick offers her extensive decorations for rent after the holiday season. Aside from the Christmas trees, most items can be utilized for various events, a strategy she hopes will engage the wider community. Last year’s Grinch-themed decorations are already available for rent on Facebook Marketplace, with Fitzpatrick willing to assist with setup for an additional fee.
Reflecting on her dedication to creating a festive atmosphere, Fitzpatrick said, “It’s just my holiday. I’ve done it ever since my kids were little. I just love Christmas; I love celebrating Christ’s birthday.” Her husband, Rick Fitzpatrick, humorously adds that her creativity drives her to create elaborate decorations year after year. “Once my brain gets into that creative mode, it doesn’t stop,” she noted.
The Fitzpatrick home, adorned with glittery, candy-colored decorations, serves as a beacon of holiday spirit, welcoming family and friends to celebrate the joy of Christmas. With each detail meticulously crafted, Fitzpatrick’s home is not just a display but a heartfelt expression of love and tradition that continues to bring families together during the festive season.
