Senator Gallego Urges Action on Government Shutdown and Health Care Costs
Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) has voiced strong criticism of Republican leadership regarding the ongoing government shutdown and rising health care costs during an appearance on MSNBC. Speaking with Ali Vitali, Gallego highlighted the urgent need for action to protect federal workers’ pay and prevent significant increases in health insurance premiums for millions of Americans.
Gallego’s remarks come at a critical time for government employees and those reliant on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). He stated, “I think so, you know, yesterday we actually proposed two bills that would take care of all government employees, as well as contractors that are not being paid right now.” He emphasized that the government should not allow the president to selectively choose which federal employees receive their pay. “We’re not going to give the power to the president to basically pick and choose to pay the federal employees that he likes versus the federal employees that we all want, which is across the board, everybody,” Gallego asserted.
Potential Health Care Crisis
The senator warned that, without intervention, health care premiums could nearly double starting on November 1. According to Gallego, this increase would impose a substantial financial burden on families, particularly in Arizona, where the average family of four could see their insurance rates rise by almost $3,400 more annually. “That’s almost $7,600 a year. They’re going to be paying $760 more in premiums essentially a month,” he noted, stressing the real-life implications of these figures.
Gallego directed his frustration toward GOP leaders, including Senate Majority Whip John Thune and former President Donald Trump, for their perceived inaction. He lamented, “What we’re looking at when it comes to true leadership coming from Thune, and the lack of leadership coming from Donald Trump, we don’t see anything.” Additionally, he expressed concern over Representative Mike Johnson, who he claimed has effectively hindered Congress from responding promptly to these urgent issues. “So there’s a whole lack of leadership that’s coming from the Republican Party right now,” Gallego stated during the interview.
Call for Bipartisan Solutions
Senator Gallego’s objectives are clear: advocating for lower insurance premiums for Americans while striving for a bipartisan agreement to reopen the government. “All we want is two things. Number one, keeping insurance premiums very low for as many Americans as possible. And number two, having a good deal when it comes to reopening the government, which again, we agree has to be a compromise no matter what,” he concluded, indicating a willingness to negotiate across party lines to resolve the ongoing crisis.
As the situation develops, Gallego’s calls for action resonate with many who are concerned about the implications of inaction on both government operations and personal health care expenses. The urgency for leadership and effective solutions has never been more critical.
